Physicochemical property
Colorless liquid Colorless liquid. Insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, benzene, and petroleum ether. Capable of undergoing ring-opening polymerization and copolymerization with conjugated dienes. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, with an explosive limit of 3.4% to 8.5% (by volume). Critical temperature is 233°C. Critical pressure is 4.64 MPa. Cyclopentene is highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, causing skin redness and swelling, corneal opacity, and ingestion may lead to stomach pain and vomiting. The oral LD50 for rats is 24,000 mg/kg. The maximum permissible concentration in the workplace is 0.15 mg/m³.
[Preparation Method] It is produced by selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene, dehydration of cyclopentanol, or dehydrohalogenation of halogenated cyclopentane.
[Main Uses] Used as a comonomer and in organic synthesis. It is utilized in the production of polycyclopentene rubber, cyclopentane-1,2-diol, cyclopentene oxide, the drug ketamine, cyclopentylphenol (a disinfectant), cyclopentanal, cyclopentanediol, and so on.
